WELCOME and ANNOUNCEMENTS

*INVOCATION

Pastor:         In the name of the Father and of the † Son and of the Holy Spirit.

People:        Amen.

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS

Pastor:         Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.

People:        Amen.

Pastor:         If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.  But if we confess our sins, God who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

(Silence for reflection and self-examination)

Pastor:         Most merciful God,

People:        We confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

Pastor:        Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

People:        Amen.

GREETING

Pastor:         The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.

People:        And also with you.

CHILDREN’S CHURCH DISMISSAL

FIRST LESSON   Romans 8:14-17

14For all who are led by the Spirit of God are children of God. 15For you did not receive a spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received a spirit of adoption. When we cry, “Abba! Father!” 16it is that very Spirit bearing witness with our spirit that we are children of God, 17and if children, then heirs, heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ—if, in fact, we suffer with him so that we may also be glorified with him.

Pastor: The word of the Lord.

People: Thanks be to God.

*VERSE

*GOSPEL LESSON    John 14:8-17, 25-27

Pastor:          The Holy Gospel according to St. John, the fourteenth chapter.

People:        Glory to you, O Lord.

8Philip said to [Jesus,] “Lord, show us the Father, and we will be satisfied.” 9Jesus said to him, “Have I been with you all this time, Philip, and you still do not know me? Whoever has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father’? 10Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words that I say to you I do not speak on my own; but the Father who dwells in me does his works. 11Believe me that I am in the Father and the Father is in me; but if you do not, then believe me because of the works themselves. 12Very truly, I tell you, the one who believes in me will also do the works that I do and, in fact, will do greater works than these, because I am going to the Father. 13I will do whatever you ask in my name, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. 14If in my name you ask me for anything, I will do it.

15“If you love me, you will keep my commandments. 16And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Advocate, to be with you forever. 17This is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees him nor knows him. You know him, because he abides with you, and he will be in you. 25“I have said these things to you while I am still with you. 26But the Advocate, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you everything, and remind you of all that I have said to you. 27Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled, and do not let them be afraid.”

Pastor: The Gospel of the Lord

People:        Praise to you, O Christ.

THE MESSAGE                  Pastor Wendy Berthelsen

*THE HYMN OF THE DAY    O Day Full of Grace   vs 1,2,4

*THE APOSTLES’ CREED

I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.
I believe in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day he rose again. He ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.
I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

Each prayer petition will end with –
Pastor: Lord in your mercy

People: Hear our prayer.

CONFIRMATION

Introduction of the students (confirmation students are invited to stand before the congregation)

Mara Welch: Dear Friends, we give thanks for the gift of baptism and for these students,

Memphis Barton and Candice Jones, one with us in the body of Christ, who have been instructed in the Christian faith and desire to make a public affirmation of their baptism.

Memphis and Candice, in Holy Baptism, our Lord Jesus Christ received you and made you members of His Church. In the community of God’s people, you have learned from His Word, you have been nourished at His table, and you have been called to be witnesses to the Gospel of Jesus Christ.

Jesus said: “Everyone who acknowledges me before others, the Son of Man also will acknowledge before the angels of God; but whoever denies me before others will be denied before the angels of God.” (Luke 12:8-9)

I ask you therefore to acknowledge your faith in Christ Jesus, reject sin, and confess the faith of the church as you affirm your baptism.

Mara Welch: Do you renounce the devil and all the forces that defy God?

Students: I renounce them.

Mara Welch: Do you renounce the ways of sin that draw you from God?

Students: I renounce them.

(Congregation Stands)

Mara Welch: Memphis and Candice and fellow children of God, do you believe in God the Father?

All: I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth.

Mara Welch: Students, what does this mean?

Students: I believe that God has created me and all that exists, that he has given me and still preserves my body and soul, my eyes and ears, my reason and all my senses, together with food and clothing, home and family, and all my property.

Every day he provides abundantly for all the needs of my life. He protects me from all danger and guards and keeps me from every evil.

He does this purely out of Fatherly and divine goodness and mercy, though I do not deserve it. Therefore I ought to thank, praise, serve, and obey him. This is most certainly true!

Mara Welch: Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God?

All: I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord. He was conceived by the power of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended into hell. On the third day He rose again. He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead.

Mara Welch: Students, what does this mean?

Students: I believe that Jesus Christ—true God, begotten of the Father from eternity, and also true man, born of the Virgin Mary—is my Lord.

He has redeemed me, a lost and condemned creature, and has freed me from sin, death, and the power of the devil, not with silver and gold, but with his holy and precious blood and his innocent suffering and death.

He has done all this in order that I might be his own, live under him in his kingdom, and serve him in everlasting righteousness, innocence, and blessedness, even as he is risen from the dead and lives and reigns for all eternity. This is most certainly true!

Mara Welch: Do you believe in the Holy Spirit?

All: I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, the life everlasting. Amen.

Mara Welch: Students, what does this mean?

Students: I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ my Lord or come to him; but the Holy Spirit has called me through the Gospel, enlightened me with his gifts, and sanctified and preserved me in the true faith.

In the same way, he calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth, and preserves it in unity with Jesus Christ in the one true faith.

In this Christian church, he daily forgives abundantly all my sins and the sins of all believers; and at the last day, he will raise me and all the dead and will grant everlasting life to me and to all who believe in Christ. This is most certainly true!

(Congregation May Be Seated)

Pastor: Memphis and Candice, You have made a public profession of your faith. Do you intend to continue in the covenant God made with you in baptism:

To live among God’s faithful people,

To hear the word of God and share in the Lord’s supper,

To grow as disciples of Jesus Christ through Scripture, prayer, and worship,

To proclaim the good news of God in Christ through word and deed,

To serve all people, following the example of Jesus?

Students: I do, and ask God to help and guide me.

Pastor: People of God, do you promise to support these fellow children of God and pray for them in their life in Christ?

All: We do, and we ask God to help and guide us.

Pastor: Let us pray.

Gracious God, through water and the Spirit you have made these students your own. You forgave them all their sins and brought them to newness of life. Continue to strengthen them with the Holy Spirit, and daily increase in them your gifts of grace: the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord, the spirit of joy in your presence; through your Son Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.

All: Amen.

(The first confirmation students kneel while the rest return to their seats. The family of each student is invited forward to join the laying on of hands. Each student will return with their family to their seats as the next student and their family comes forward.)

Pastor: Father in heaven, for Jesus’ sake, stir up in __(student’s name)___ the gift of your Holy Spirit; confirm his/her faith, guide his/her life, empower his/her in her serving, give him/her patience in suffering, and bring him/her to everlasting life.

Each student and their family answers: “Amen.”

PEACE

Pastor: The peace of the Lord be with you always.

People: And also with you.

OFFERTORY PRAYER
Pastor: Let us pray. Merciful Father,
People: We offer with joy and thanksgiving what you have first given us—ourselves, our time, and our possessions, signs of your gracious love. Receive them for the sake of him who offered himself for us, Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

SOLO             To God the Holy Spirit Let Us Pray                          John Anderson

DIALOGUE
Pastor: The Lord be with you.
People: And also with you.

Pastor: Lift up your hearts.
People: We lift them to the Lord.

Pastor: Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
People: It is right to give him thanks and praise.

PREFACE

Pastor: It is indeed right and salutary that we should at all times and in all places offer thanks and praise to you, O Lord, holy Father, almighty and everliving God. But chiefly we are bound to praise you for the glorious resurrection of our Lord; for he is the true Passover Lamb who gave himself to take away our sin, who by his death has destroyed death, and by his rising has brought us to eternal life. And so, with Mary Magdalene and Peter and all the witnesses of the resurrection, with earth and sea and all their creatures, and with angels and archangels, cherubim and seraphim, we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

THANKSGIVING
Pastor: Blessed are you, Lord of heaven and earth. In mercy for our fallen world you gave your only Son, that all those who believe in him should not perish, but have eternal life. We give thanks to you for the salvation you have prepared for us through Jesus Christ. Send now your Holy Spirit into our hearts, that we may receive our Lord with a living faith as he comes to us in his holy supper.
People: Amen. Come, Lord Jesus.

WORDS OF INSTITUTION
Pastor: In the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.
Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Pastor: Lord, remember us in your kingdom, and teach us to pray:
People: Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

POST-COMMUNION BLESSING
Pastor: The body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ strengthen you and keep you in his grace.
People: Amen.

POST-COMMUNION PRAYER
Pastor: We give you thanks, almighty God, that you have refreshed us through the healing power of this gift of life; and we pray that in your mercy you would strengthen us, through this gift, in faith toward you and in fervent love toward one another; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord.
People: Amen.

BLESSING
Pastor: Almighty God, Father, ☩ Son, and Holy Spirit, bless you now and forever.
People: Amen.
